The original Longton Cottage Hospital was built in 1868 in Lawley Street, Longton. Local working class people collected a then massive £130 towards the total cost of £600 to build it. And a bigger and better equipped new Longton Cottage Hospital was built on it’s present site in Upper Belgrave Road in 1890.
This plaque can still be seen in Longton Cottage Hospital. It says,
“This tablet commemorates the gift of £1000 towards this building as a war memorial offering from the Longton manufacturers”.
Local miners have also collected money for the hospital along with other local people.
It belongs to the community and we don’t want it closed!
It will be a very sad day if Longton Cottage hospital closes, not only does the hospital deliver a very high quality of service,it is surrounded by a local community who’s relatives fought long and hard to raise the money to build it in the first place !If the closure goes ahead we will be losing a very important piece of local history. . . . . . . please sign our petition and let us hope that these people who are intent on closing Longton Cottage ,may have a change of heart .
